Telecom Council Roundtable Discussions provide a unique opportunity for telecom and wireless decision makers to network with decision makers in the space, review some new technologies, contribute to the discussion, and get answers from topic experts - the discussion is driven by your questions, not ours. The topic on the table for this month, Growing Mobile Data by 1000x, is sure to bring a very opinionated debate, so bring your statistics and business cards.
ABOUT THE MEETING TOPIC Every year, our friends at Cisco release the VNI forecast report, predicting an apocalyptic rise in wireless data demand…and every year, their prognoses are more or less vindicated! Currently, the VNI predicts a tenfold increase in mobile data traffic by 2019. Data demand growth is as sure a reality as death and taxes. And ironically, building a faster network just causes the demand to rise even more. Mobidia reports that LTE subscribers now consume over 10GB/mo including cellular and Wi-Fi. A 2.4GB portion of that was on cellular networks, compared to just 1.1GB for 3G device holders. That said, the wireless industry has done a great (thankless) job of investing in capacity to meet this rising demand. Qualcomm has drawn a line in the sand, saying that network capacity will eventually need to increase a frightening 1000x to keep pace with demand. We will need more spectrum, new topologies, more backhaul, and new RAN technologies to pull it off.
In this meeting, we'll talk about the subject of 1000x from both demand and supply perspectives.
ABOUT ROUNDTABLE MEETINGS Telecom Council's monthly Roundtable Meetings examine and discuss advances, needs, technologies, trends, and policies that are affecting their businesses. In addition to an audience-driven discussion, these Roundtables provide ample networking time for the experts in the room, and often several demos of new technologies or startup companies.
