This month's ComTech Forum meeting on Open Source Telecom brings together members, telcos, vendors, service companies and startups working on open source technologies for rural, greenfield, and developing markets, including unlicensed and Facebook's Open Source Cellular project. Open source platforms and technologies may have significant impact on the cost of operating telecom networks. Besides potentially lowering the cost to a point where rural coverage makes sense, open source can take full advantage of white box trends, virtualization, and software-defined networking to reduce the cost and OpEx of a fixed and cellular network for deployment in underdeveloped regions, and could possibly bleed back into conventional markets.
